Artwork Author

Chen Chun (陈淳)

Chen Chun (陈淳), Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), was a renowned painter, calligrapher, and scholar who excelled in classical studies, ancient prose, poetry, calligraphy, and painting. A master of lyrical expression, he was celebrated for his unrestrained cursive seal script and bold, fluid brushwork. Trained under the eminent painter Wen Zhengming, Chen Chun drew inspiration from Song and Yuan dynasty masters. Specializing in floral painting, he occasionally ventured into landscapes characterized by minimalist texturing techniques. His floral works, rendered in subtle ink tones and tilted brushwork, achieve a delicate balance between controlled chaos and poetic spontaneity.

Artwork Story

Chongyang Wind And Rain Full

This painting captures the vibrant activities of fishermen and travelers along suburban streams during the Chongyang Festival (Double Ninth Festival), rendered in Chen Chun’s signature free-flowing ink techniques. Chrysanthemums bloom in abundance, while slanting wind and drizzle animate the scene, echoing the inscribed poem:

“The city is engulfed in autumn storms as Chongyang approaches;
Oranges ripen, pomelos gold, chrysanthemums exhale fragrance.
In the crisp chill of the season, boundless joy arises—
Why dwell on distant lands when such delights are here?”
