Georges Seurat

Georges Seurat (1859–1891), French, Georges Seurat, born on December 2, 1859, in Paris, emerged as a pivotal figure in the post-impressionist movement, renowned for his innovative painting technique known as pointillism or divisionism. This method, characterized by the application of small, distinct dots of color that blend in the viewer's eye, marked a significant departure from traditional brushstroke techniques. Growing up in a bourgeois family, Seurat's artistic inclinations were evident from an early age, with his talent nurtured by his uncle, a painter and textile merchant. His formal education at the École des beaux-arts in Paris, though not marked by outstanding academic achievement, provided him with a solid foundation in classical techniques. Despite his relatively brief career—cut short by his untimely death at the age of 31—Seurat's influence on the art world was profound.
