About the Artist

Franz von Stuck
German (1863–1928)
Franz von Stuck, born Franz Stuck, was a prominent German artist whose work spanned the realms of drawing, painting, and sculpture, primarily associated with the Jugendstil and Symbolism movements. Born on February 23, 1863, in Tettenweis, Lower Bavaria, Stuck was the son of a village miller. His artistic journey began at the Royal School of Arts and Crafts in Munich from 1878 to 1881, under the mentorship of Ferdinand Barth, before advancing his studies at the Munich Academy until 1885. Initially gaining recognition as a draftsman, Stuck contributed illustrations to magazines during his school years, showcasing his early talent. Stuck's career flourished with his involvement in creating allegories and emblem designs for the Vienna-based publisher Gerlach & Schenk in 1882, a project that also featured works by contemporaries like Max Klinger and Gustav Klimt. His witty designs for classical themes in 'Karten und Vignetten' further cemented his reputation in 1886. Stuck's popularity soared with his caricatures for 'Fliegende Blätter', a magazine previously associated with Barth, marking a significant phase in his artistic development. By 1887, he ventured into oil painting, exploring new mediums. In 1892, alongside Wilhelm Trübner, Stuck co-founded the Munich Secession, challenging the established art scene, yet he was later counted among the Munich Painter Princes, alongside figures like Franz von Lenbach and Friedrich August von Kaulbach. His role as a professor at the Academy from 1895 underscored his influence in shaping the next generation of artists. Stuck's legacy as a pivotal figure in the transition towards modern art in Germany remains undisputed, with his works celebrated for their innovative blend of symbolism and Jugendstil aesthetics.
