About the Artist

Fritz von Uhde
German (1848–1911)
Fritz von Uhde, born Friedrich Hermann Carl Uhde on May 22, 1848, in Wolkenburg, Saxony, was a distinguished German painter and former cavalry officer whose work bridged the gap between Realism and Impressionism. His artistic repertoire included religious themes, showcasing his versatility and depth. Von Uhde hailed from a prominent family with roots in Gardelegen, Altmark, tracing back to the 14th century. His father, Bernhard von Uhde, was a high-ranking Saxon official, and his mother, Anna Auguste Clara Nollain, was honored for her contributions during the Franco-Prussian War. Von Uhde's personal life was marked by both joy and tragedy. In 1880, he married Amalie von Endres, with whom he had three daughters before her untimely death in 1886 during childbirth. This loss left him to raise their daughters alone, a role he embraced fully. His daughters pursued their own paths, with Anna becoming a painter, Amalie marrying into a family of church officials, and Sofie making her mark as a travel writer. Von Uhde's legacy is not only in his art but also in his dedication to his family, reflecting the depth of his character and the breadth of his influence beyond the canvas. He passed away on February 25, 1911, in Munich, leaving behind a body of work that continues to be celebrated for its emotional resonance and technical mastery.
