About the Artist

Constantin Westchiloff
Russian (1878–1945)
Constantin Alexandrovich Westchiloff, a Russian artist born on May 15, 1878, and passing on April 23, 1945, in New York, was a figure of considerable talent and dedication in the realm of art. His early artistic education was nurtured at the Valaam Monastery under the guidance of Father Luka, who was then overseeing the frescoes of the main cathedral. Westchiloff's formal training began at the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts from 1893 to 1896, followed by studies under the renowned Ilya Repin at Princess M. Tenisheva's school and later at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, where he graduated with a gold medal in 1904. Repin held Westchiloff in high esteem, considering him not just a favorite but a 'personal pupil.' Westchiloff's career was marked by a diverse range of artistic endeavors, from historical compositions and portraits to landscapes and theatrical set designs. His early works, including a diorama commemorating the founding of St. Petersburg and his diploma piece depicting Ivan the Terrible after his Kazan victories, showcased his skill in capturing historical narratives. A journey to Rome, extended at his request, further enriched his artistic perspective. Following the death of Vasily Vereshchagin, Westchiloff undertook commissions for the Naval Ministry, a role he would hold officially from 1911, creating significant works on naval battles of the Russo-Japanese War. His quest for historical accuracy led him to graduate from the St. Petersburg Archaeological Institute in 1908. Westchiloff's travels to Egypt and Palestine in 1912 resulted in a series of studies intended for a historical composition on Caesar and Cleopatra, reflecting his lifelong engagement with history and art.
