“The Sistine Madonna” is an oil painting by Raphael, created between 1512 and 1513. Commissioned by Pope Julius II, it was intended as an altarpiece for the San Sisto Monastery in Piacenza. The painting features the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, descending on clouds. Flanking them are Saint Sixtus and Saint Barbara, while two cherubs at the bottom have become iconic in their own right.
