Artwork Story

Created between 1433 and 1435, Fra Angelico’s “Virgin of Humility” depicts the Virgin Mary seated on the ground, tenderly holding the Christ Child. She holds a lily, symbolizing purity, while the Child rests his forehead against her cheek. Angels in the background draw aside a golden curtain and play musical instruments, enhancing the sacred and serene atmosphere. The painting’s soft colors and harmonious composition exemplify the Early Renaissance blend of human emotion and divine grace.
