Unlike contemporaries who idealized specimens, his approach favored ecological authenticity, often depicting birds mid-motion or interacting with their habitats. The project, among the most ambitious of its era, drew from both Mediterranean species and exotic imports, reflecting Enlightenment Europe’s growing fascination with global biodiversity. Though overshadowed by later scientific illustrators, his work subtly influenced Romantic-era nature studies through its balance of rigor and vitality.
